Gugaa – Albury
Airport Installation
Glennys Briggs, a proud Wiradjuri, Taungurung, and Yorta Yorta artist, was commissioned to create a major mixed media sculpture for Albury Airport. This work pays tribute to Wiradjuri Country, its people, and its history, while also honouring the birthplace of her Great Grandmother.
The artwork features the Gugaa (goanna), the totem of the Wiradjuri people, set against imagery inspired by dendroglyphs—sacred carved tree markings that hold deep cultural significance. Incorporated into the piece is the Wiradjuri language: Gawaymbanha – Welcome. Albury Airport is on Wiradjuri Country. The wording was developed in consultation with Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Edna Stewart.
Through this installation, Glennys sought to create a powerful cultural marker that acknowledges Country and reinforces its sacredness. She hopes travellers pause to reflect on the significance of the land they are arriving on, and feel encouraged to learn more about Wiradjuri culture.
The Gugaa commission forms part of AlburyCity’s Reconciliation Action Plan and stands as a lasting reminder of the resilience of Aboriginal people and the enduring connection to Country.
